Paint Throughout History

It is believed that paint was first used about 20,000 years ago. It is known that people drew pictures in caves and depicted their lives. It is understood that they used raw paints when drawing these pictures. Later, for hundreds, even thousands of years, people produced paints and dyes from stones, from boiling certain substances, and from plants.

Used today for decorative, protective, and many other purposes, modern/next-generation paints continued being produced in factories and chemical laboratories almost everywhere, picking up great speed following the Industrial Revolution.

When Did Today’s Paints Start Being Produced?

The production of today’s industrial paints dates back to the 1700s. Factories started being built in great numbers after the Industrial revolution and paint factories were established. The first paint factory was established in Boston, the United States. The paint was patented, however, by D.R. Averill of Ohio in 1867. The paint he prepared in the United States is the first example of today’s ready-kaolinmixed paints. The period when paint became seriously widespread began in the 1880s.

Paints continued to be produced through continuous development and renewal after this point. Environmentally friendly paints and dyes began to be produced and healthier products began to emerge as awareness of environmental pollution increased.
